Q. Hi, my grown up son bought an expensive(ish) weatherproof coat, made from a flat weave, nylon type material in black (of course!) and over a short winter period, seams began coming apart as he had bought it too small for taking jumpers as well. I have found similar material to create two roomy pleats at the back of the arm holes and my first idea was to tape them into position - didn't work. I can't sew it as my fingers aren't tough enough for the job. I saw your flexible repair glue online and wondered if this would have enough shear strength to avoid coming apart if the material was slightly tugged? I'm hoping it will be a fix or it's 'buy another coat' before he intermittently freezes with this changeable spring. Any advice is gratefully received!

A. I’m hoping that the repair can be done on the inside of the coat? I say this for aesthetics purposes because the adhesive would be visible and may not look very nice on an expensive coat. The adhesive will work really well and will be there long after the coat. I do have to give a few warnings though if deciding to use the adhesive. The adhesive will soak into the material and may even run through to the other side so please be careful when applying. You can use some sellotape to protect the areas you don’t want the adhesive. Also try and lie the coat flat as the adhesive does take 10-12 hours to cure properly (we suggest leave over night). Apart from being very carful when applying, the adhesive will work and be strong enough. What you may find is that the adhesive will strengthen that area, but the tension will then need to go some where else so other areas may then take the stress and be vulnerable. All in all though it should be able to get you through another year or two before having buy a new coat.

We do supply the adhesive in black which will help. When it comes to applying, I would say start with a little as you can always add more. Use a spatula or similar to spread the glue over the areas needed.

Q. Looking for a repair kit for a DRIZA BONE DUSTER?

A. If the repair is on one of the flat(ish) parts of the coat then maybe patches will work. Our Tuff tape patches can be used to cover the damaged area and is an instant repair. Be sure to lie the coat flat and then rub the patch on quite hard, using the back of a spoon for example. This is to get all of the air bubbles out underneath the patch.

If the repair is around any corners or edges or seams then the patches will not work as moisture will get underneath and the patch will fall off.

The more permanent repair, is to use Stormsure Flexible Repair Adhesive. Apply the glue over the area that needs repairing and leave to cure. If the coat is ripped, then try to bring the edges of the rip as close together as possible, then apply the glue. Be careful of the glue running through underneath though! This is especially best for fixing splits in seams or gluing buckles back on.

Q. Do we need to dry an outdoor coat, after washing, before applying stormproof water repellent spray?

A. We normally suggest applying (for all clothing or fabrics) when dry, because the repellent sticks to the fibres of the fabric and this happens best when the fabric is dry as the fibres stick upwards better. You can apply when it is wet, it still works but perhaps not as well. If you do then rough up (rub) the coat first just to try and get the fibres to stick up then spray on. The most important thing is that if you apply when wet or dry is to leave it to completely dry after application. I mean, put on a radiator or similar after you have sprayed the coat until the coat is fully dry. This will give the best results and longer lasting protection.
